Before your summer road trip – 7 things to check on your car

Summer is peak season for long drives. Before you load the car and head for the coast or abroad, spend an hour on the car – or let us do it at your home.

1. Tyres and pressure

Summer roads and a fully loaded car increase strain. Check tread depth, sidewalls and that pressure matches the manufacturer's recommendation (often on a sticker in the door).

Still on winter tyres? Switch to summer tyres before a long trip – they wear faster in heat and grip less on warm asphalt.

2. Oil and fluids

Low oil level or old oil puts extra strain on the engine in summer traffic. Check the level on a cold engine and top up if needed. Also ensure coolant, washer fluid and brake fluid are at the right level.

3. The battery

Heat and long idling in traffic can stress a weak battery. Does the car crank slowly or is the warning light on? Let us test and replace the battery on site if needed – especially if the car has been standing still.

4. Brakes and lights

Test the brakes on an empty car park. Check all lights work – front, rear, indicators and brake lights. Police stop more cars before the holidays, and faulty lights mean fines.

5. AC and cabin

Working AC makes long drives more comfortable and reduces fog on the windscreen in rain. Replace worn wiper blades before you go – summer rain can arrive suddenly.

6. Spares and equipment

Pack a high-visibility vest, warning triangle, first aid kit and phone charger. Check the spare wheel or repair kit is there and the jack works.
